Thanks, Stephen, for this festive message.
But the jury (or was it you?) made a mistake in mentioning “Elias’s notion of ‘civilising offensives’”. Although the concept was quite current in early figurational discussions – a chapter in in my bibliography of figurational sociology in the Netherlands up to 1989 bears the title ‘Civilizing Offensives’ (between inverted commas) – it was not one coined or used by Elias himself. To recall his thoughts about the relation between intentions and constraints in the expansion of civilizing models of behaviour I fruitfully reread the third paragraph in the concluding chapter of The Process of Civilisation (the one about diminishing contrasts and increasing variation).

Congratulations!
After reading in Figurations #36 that ‘our’ online journal had been launched “almost simultaneously with” Cambio, I found that the latter had been there from June last year (http://www.cambio.unifi.it/CMpro-v-p-56.html):

I wondered and tried to contact MPublishing – in vain. But now the manna is falling from heaven – I hope and wish for many years to come.

Hello. What a pleasure to discover the Norbert Elias foundation. I am a former student of Sociology from University of London-as an independent writer and scholar, both of my current research projects utilize the theories and thinking of Norbert Elias- within figurational sociology- 1. an exploration of social media platforms delivering “self-management” health care, locating this in “bodies and biology” I also connect this to the emerging field of neurosemiotics. 2. As well as within National Habitus-and the everyday practical embodiment, as I explore the experimental documentary films of Lourdes Portillo. I look forward to following this blog- and would like to learn more about the conference, Reinventing Elias.

It is amusing! I am really interested in Elias works. I want to participate in the conference, but I have some questions.
When is the deadline for abstract and full paper?
Can someone send articles to two panels?

Great idea, this conference. Living in Amsterdam, I expect to attend quite a number of sessions. I was tempted to give a tentative answer to some of the questions in the call for papers, but since I am reading this in the train back from a meeting in Paris, drinking a good glass of wine, I think I’d better leave it at this for the moment.

There seemed to be no end to new beginnings by Elias in his last productions, especially in the New Introduction to ‘The Symbol Theory’ (toward which Richard Kilminster now is bringing, I hear, that “radical editorial initiative” that Norbert did not allow for its earlier version).
As one of the assistants who laboured also on the last Freud paper I often wondered what happened with it. Now I am glad to read that it got life in a ‘jolie’ French version. And the latter’s inclusion in English in the Collected Workd is a brilliant move!

supplement: I read “last” for “latest”, so I was too fast to think the edition of the Collected Works finished, as I learned from Stephen’s next posting on the French Freud book.
